HVS Orchids Collaboration
HVS Orchids, located in Nootdorp and other locations, cultivates high-quality cut Cymbidiums.
Last June, sensors were installed in multiple sections at HVS Orchids to measure temperature and humidity in the greenhouse. Additionally, the sensors monitor plant temperature, radiation, and condensation timing.
In one of the sections equipped with these sensors, Doekendraad.nl installed a cavity screen, enhancing climate control and optimizing growing conditions.
Energy savings: Insulates through the layer of still air in the cavity.
Improved vertical temperature profile: Reduces radiation, benefiting crop growth.
Stable temperature throughout the greenhouse for consistent cultivation conditions.
Higher relative humidity (RH): Minimal condensation and reduced risk of fungal diseases due to more uniform temperatures.
Better evaporation control: Less radiation and efficient moisture drainage prevent issues like Mycosphaerella.
Two transparent screens: Can be used even during the day.
Two cloths on one installation: Lower investment costs.
Installation at the top of the trellis: More free space above the plant canopy.
Why did you choose this test?
"We chose the screen, together with Ben (HVS Orchids) and Colin (Doekendraad.nl), for the test and sensors. We are focused on energy savings and see several other benefits, which we consider a nice bonus."
Why did you choose a cavity screen?
"At our other location in Pijnacker, it was difficult to install a second screen system. The insulation now seems even better than with two single installations. For that reason, we also opted for a cavity screen at our Nootdorp location, above the existing energy screen."
What is immediately noticeable in the greenhouse, and what is only visible in the report?
"The difference from our old cloth. The previous cloth was not diffuse; this one is, and you can already feel a difference. It’s still too early to see results on the sensors, and the outcomes can only be properly assessed after a full 8–9 month season."
When will this test be considered successful?
"The main goal of the sensors is to show what the cavity screen does and whether there is indeed a difference between the two sections. Our focus is primarily on energy savings and a more stable climate."

"Beyond energy savings, we also notice other advantages of a cavity screen. What we already see is that we can achieve a cooler climate in summer compared to sections without a cavity screen."

What do you hope to achieve with this test?
"The main goal of this test is to find out which combination of cloth types works best in a cavity screen—screen cloth & energy cloth."
After how long can you say a positive result is achieved?
"We are conducting this test over one season (8–9 months), in collaboration with Sigrow and HVS Orchids. This allows us to experience a full range of weather conditions and temperatures, giving the clearest picture of the achieved results."
How is the collaboration going?
"Sigrow provided and installed the equipment, and via the app/website, we can monitor all data 24/7. At HVS Orchids, we have been a trusted partner for years. The great thing about this collaboration is that everyone interprets the data differently, each taking out what they find important."

What would you like to see in the test results?
"We hope to see how the temperature in the greenhouse can be controlled, the differences between having a cavity screen or not, and to collect as much data/facts as possible."
What is the goal of this test for you?
"The goal is to use these test results to provide our (future) customers with the best possible advice and to substantiate actual results, although this will vary per crop. We also want to see if we can detect plant stress moments early, which is especially beneficial for our customers."
